Description
Veterans involved in correctional systems face unique challenges stemming from their military service, including, but not limited to, mental health issues, stigma, and difficulties with community reintegration. Recognising these needs, the South Australian Department for Correctional Services (DCS) introduced the Veteran Staff, Prisoners, and Offenders Strategy and Action Plan 2021–2025. This Strategy aimed to provide recognition and tailored support to veteran offenders and staff while addressing the systemic barriers to community reintegration. The Strategy involved the appointment of a DCS Senior Advisor, Veteran Services to coordinate the implementation of actions outlined in the Strategy. This presentation reviewed the recognised needs of veteran offenders and staff at DCS, the Strategy’s alignment with these needs, and its implementation and outcomes.| Period | 2025 |
