Communication in diverse settings – How older migrants manage language barriers in accessing and utilising care services

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Aims: Ageing migrants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds experience systemic barriers including social isolation, and limited support. Language barriers impact on care provision remain understudied, particularly in community settings. In our research project, we aim to synthesise research evidence on challenges and opportunities in the care of CALD migrants experiencing language barriers (Phase 1), and to understand the care needs and the approaches to meet these needs for CALD migrants in an Australian social context (Phase 2).

Method: In Phase 1, a systematic review was undertaken to search and synthesise research evidence on language barriers and how these impact on the care of CALD migrants in a global context. Seven databases were searched for peer-reviewed original qualitative studies published in English since 2004. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research was employed for methodological quality screening.

Results: 1,197 papers were identified, 1,146 excluded, 51 papers included. JBI methodology informed data extraction and analysis. The findings evidence the lack of timely recognition, accurate assessment, targeted interventions for CALD ageing migrants experiencing language barriers in the community care settings. The opportunities to address these care challenges include, are not limited to, promoting person-centred care, empowerment, and social engagement for culturally and linguistically congruent aged care services.

Conclusions: Effective communication enhance older migrants’ health, well-being, and quality of life and minimise social isolation. The systematic review findings will be presented as suggested strategies for aged care providers to facilitate equitable access to and provision of inclusive care.
