Delivered an invited guest lecture for HLTH7011 Contemporary Issues in Health Research at Flinders University’s College of Health and Enablement, focused on digital health, AI implementation, implementation science, complexity science, and research translation.

The session examined why promising health innovations often struggle to move into routine practice, asking whether implementation challenges stem from the technology, evidence, workflow, people, system conditions, or how success is evaluated. Using examples from RAPIDx_AI and PROLIFERATE_AI, the lecture invited Honours students to examine implementation as a real-world, human, organisational, and system-level challenge.

The session connected live research outputs with curriculum by introducing students to applied frameworks for understanding innovation uptake, usability, stakeholder engagement, barriers, optimisation, and evaluation within complex adaptive health systems. Students were invited to consider not only whether an innovation works, but for whom, in what context, under what conditions, and at what cost.

A simplified pre-class and in-class activity was also developed to support student engagement. Students were invited to reflect on a health, social care, digital health, education, or organisational innovation they had encountered, and to use these examples during the session to discuss how innovations move through complex systems, who is involved, what barriers emerge, and how implementation can be improved.

This activity contributed to research impact and knowledge translation by embedding current research from RAPIDx_AI, PROLIFERATE, and PROLIFERATE_AI into Honours-level teaching, supporting future clinicians, researchers, managers, and policymakers to engage critically with evidence, digital health, AI, and implementation in practice.
