Description
Dr Maria Alejandra Pinero de Plaza was invited by Associate Professor Stuart Ekberg to deliver a guest workshop for the topic HLTH7011 (Contemporary Issues in Health Research) at Flinders University. The session, titled “Mapping Sociotechnical Systems and Designing Evaluations with PROLIFERATE and PROLIFERATE_AI,” provided students with practical methods for evaluating complex health interventions within sociotechnical contexts.Session Overview:
Dr Pinero de Plaza introduced sociotechnical systems thinking and the use of PROLIFERATE and PROLIFERATE_AI frameworks for adaptive evaluation. She explained the five core constructs of these frameworks: Understanding, Emotional Response, Barriers, Motivation, and Optimisation. Students were guided through a real-world case study, RAPIDx AI in emergency cardiac care, which illustrated step-by-step data capture and evaluation logic.
During the interactive component, students mapped the sociotechnical elements of their own research projects, identified relevant data sources, and drafted evaluation plans. Dr Pinero de Plaza facilitated group discussion and a question-and-answer session to help students apply these frameworks to their own contexts.
Delivery and Collaboration:
The workshop was delivered in a hybrid format to accommodate both in-person and online participation. Dr Pinero de Plaza provided a comprehensive slide deck and a tailored worksheet, both of which were made available to students on FLO/Canvas. The session was designed in consultation with Associate Professor Ekberg to ensure alignment with the unit’s learning outcomes and to support student assessment tasks.
Outcomes and Impact:
The workshop equipped postgraduate students with skills to apply advanced evaluation frameworks in their research, to map sociotechnical systems, and to design adaptive, co-designed evaluations. Students gained practical experience in translating evaluation theory into research planning and assessment.
