Description
This paper looks at Ikarian emigration from the Aegean region to Australia between 1910-1939 (loosely corresponding to the period between Federation and WWII). Of focus will be their settlement and initial community building, especially in key locations in South Australia such as Port Pirie and the Adelaide CBD. This paper is a component of a larger PhD project aimed at exploring Aegean islander migration to the English-speaking world between 1815-1939 – with the Ikarians of South Australia (1900-1939) being one case study, alongside the Chiots of London (1815-1900). The ways in which these migrants emigrated, settled, built communities, and integrated into wider Anglophone society, as well as the multiple identities that they navigated, are considered, contemplated, and unravelled in this project.| Period | 27 May 2022 |
