Description
Games developers working in collaboration with Indigenous groups to represent their cultures, stories, and experiences face myriad challenges in undertaking to create a ‘World’ game. In addition to the normal design challenges of creating compelling story and gameplay, they may struggle to reconcile design considerations with the pressure to educate and foster empathy from neutral or even hostile players, to the extent that even Indigenous developers find it impossible to represent their own peoples and experiences. Using a sample of World games as examples, this presentation will examine the design decisions and partnership models that have proven or might prove successful—and by what measure.
