Measuring Sustainable Development Goals in Tourism Villages: A Quantitative Survey in Banyuwangi

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

This study investigates the role of tourism villages (TVs) in Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia, as catalysts for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite the growing popularity of TVs as a strategy for sustainable rural development, limited quantitative research has assessed their impact from the perspective of local communities. Using a cross-sectional survey of 583 residents across nine villages, this research evaluates contributions across four dimensions: social, economic, environmental, and governance. Findings reveal strong positive perceptions of TVs, particularly in enhancing social inclusion, cultural preservation, and employment opportunities. However, challenges persist, including income inequality, environmental risks, and governance limitations. Statistical and machine learning analyses highlight the interconnectedness of SDG dimensions and the need for integrated, context-sensitive policy interventions. The study concludes that tourism villages hold significant potential for advancing sustainability, provided that inclusive governance, equitable benefit-sharing, and long-term strategic planning are prioritised. Recommendations include promoting economic diversification, strengthening institutional collaboration, and expanding future research to other regions and methodologies.
