Description
Abstract presented at conference: 'Quantitative assessment of the Fundamentals of Care Framework: a pilot study'.Background: The transition towards models of person-centred care on the individual has
garnered significant momentum in addressing the diverse needs and preferences of patients in an
ever-evolving healthcare environment. This study delves into the Fundamentals of Care (FoC)
Framework, a noteworthy paradigm that underscores three essential dimensions of individualised
care: relationship, integration of care, and context. The study aimed to assess the FoC Framework
quantitatively and to preliminary study the relationship between its dimensions.
Methods: A two-stage quantitative inquiry was conducted in Spain. Firstly, an expert panel
consisting of the research group that developed the FoC Framework and the Spanish research team
identified assessment items for each dimension. Subsequently, a cross-sectional approach was
carried out to pilot the preliminary version of the FoC questionnaire in Spain. An exploratory
factor analysis and reliability study were carried out, in addition to a partial least squares
regression to study the relationship between the
FoC dimensions.
Results: The preliminary version of the scale obtained a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.92,
and exploratory factor analysis revealed three dimensions that explained 70% of the variance of the
observed data. The partial least squares regression analysis unveiled compelling one-way
associations between the dimensions, obtaining statistically significant beta coefficients and
effect sizes.
Conclusions: The preliminary version of the FoC Framework quantitative assessment questionnaire is
reliable, and exploratory three dimensions are included. In turn, these dimensions are related to
each other in a linear relationship, which establishes a unidirectional path from the context
dimension through the relational dimension to the integration of care dimension. Further studies
with a larger sample are needed for the construct and criterion validation of the tool.
