Before the research project, educators at Glandore Community Kindergarten reflected deeply on the learning experiences and spaces they offered to children. Their challenge of practice was to create a learning environment that provided a range of modalities (including digital) for children to document, evaluate and share their learning. Educators worked alongside children to explore and encourage the development of children’s working ideas and to effectively identify literacy and numeracy knowledge, skills and dispositions in play. In doing so, they formulated specific actions to document over the duration of the project. Educators intentionally gathered examples of children’s working ideas and multimodal representations. They made written observations, collected photographs, parents’ written and spoken comments, and created video and audio recordings of interactions with children.
