Description
Recent studies propose that DP1-hé-DP2 in modern Mandarin is subject only to a unified conjunctive analysis (e.g. Zhang, 2010), while otheres (e.g. Yang and Hu, 2018) claim that hé in the DP1-hé-DP2 structure in the subject position can only be analyzed as a preposition. This paper will review both Zhang’s and Yang and Hu’s tests. Under the Merge theory, within the Minimalist Program (MP) framework, I will show that in modern Chinese hé in the DP1-hé-DP2 structure in the subject position has indeed the syntactic status of either a conjunction or a preposition. Its corresponding syntax decides if the structure (or the DPs within the structure) can be topicalized, focus marked, or negated. In formal semantics, through the steps of Montague Lift, Raising, Intersection, and Minimizing (see Champollion, 2016), it will be proved that either the syntactic analysis of hé as a conjunction or as a preposition invariably leads to the same collective semantics.Period | 13 Oct 2023 → 15 Oct 2023 |
