Uneasy Bedfellows? Climate Fiction and Popular Romance Fiction

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

As a research team, we are investigating posthuman theory and climate change
fiction, exploring the artistic and emotionally supportive possibilities of
storytelling. In this paper we will explore the intersections between climate fiction and commercial romance fiction. By analysing case studies such as Sally Rooney’s Beautiful World, Where Are You, Rachel Griffin’s The Nature of Witches, and Aya de Leon’s Side Chick Nation we circle the tensions that inevitably exist when a genre that works within idealised worlds of optimistic happy endings confronts the pressing realities of the climate crisis.
