Research Biography

Alan is a research active Associate Lecturer and former project manager for the Flinders Telehealth in the Home initiative which evaluated a models of palliative, aged care and rehabilitation for services provided to the homes and primary residences of patients and carers in the Southern Adelaide and Fleurieu Region.

Dr. Taylor is an international and Australian expert in telehealth services with > 20 years professional experience in initiating and managing high value teleconsultation and tele-monitoring programs including the Queensland Health Service Delivery Network, Outbacknet@qld, Northern.net@qld, Cooeenet@qld projects for Queensland Health, and tele-rehabilitation and palliative care programs for South Australia Health.

Dr. Taylor plays an active international role in the development of guides, standards and accreditation programs for telehealth and has led the International Organisation for Standardization development of the international standard ISO/IS 13131:2021, Health informatics, Telehealth services, Quality planning guidelines.

Research Interests

Alan is passionate about delivering telehealth and eHealth services that effectively support health service delivery in regional areas in Australia and overseas in Low and Middle Income Countries. He is actively working in Standards Australia and the International Standards Organization to develop standards and guidance to support telehealth services and ehealth systems.

Dr. Taylor has published a unique international study for a Palgrave Macmillan book on Australian and Brazilian telehealth services, “Healthcare Technology in Context: Lessons for Telehealth in the Age of COVID-19” which looks in depth at the mechanisms which shape the use of healthcare technology in different contexts.

He has published more than 36 peer reviewed papers and book sections. Dr. Taylor is a peer reviewer for 8 medical and health informatics journals including BMC Health Services Research, BMC Geriatrics, BMC Medical Education, BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making, British Medical Journal, Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology.
