Research Biography

My research sits at the nexus of paramedical education, clinical practice, and system-level patient safety, with a particular emphasis on simulation-based learning, handover communication, and workplace safety. I employ quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods and scoping-review methodologies, reflecting a robust commitment to rigorous and context-sensitive inquiry.

Notably, in the simulation domain, I have developed the simulation assessment tool limiting assessor bias (SATLAB), have researched low-cost moulage techniques and examined debriefing practices from learners’ perspectives. This aligns with broader efforts to optimise feedback for both technical and non-technical skill development and sits comfortably within my simulation based education focus. My work has explored student behaviour and safety in clinical settings, such as a cross-sectional study investigating potential overtreatment by paramedic students across three South African institutions.

My research also addresses pre-hospital to emergency department handover—a critical juncture for patient safety. I developed and evaluated models and frameworks such as PEDHOM, and investigated factors that influence perceived handover quality between paramedicine and the emergency department.

Together, my work contributes to improving paramedic education, enhancing simulation-based pedagogy, and strengthening communication across the continuum of emergency care. Guided by these insights, I aim to further develop interventions that advance experiential learning, refine assessment strategies, and inform policy and curricula to elevate patient outcomes and practitioner competence in emergency medical systems.
