Research Biography

Dr Andrew Miller completed a PhD in Creative Writing and Creative Arts at Flinders University in 2010, and a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in 2006. Andrew's research reflects this eclectic background, and spans both artistic and scholarly research.

In recent years, Andrew has published and lectured extensively on the use and importance of 'multi-literacies' for tertiary students. He has published two papers on the 'multiliteracies framework' he developed, and was invited in 2015 by the New South Wales Department of Education to give a keynote address to literacy leaders in Sydney. In 2017 he presented a guest lecture on his multiliteracies framework to staff and students at the Auckland University of Technology, while in 2018 he delivered a keynote lecture on his multiliteracies framework to the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for QITEP in Language in Jakarta. In addition, the Auckland University of Technology invited Andrew to review the topic they have implemented using his framework.

Alongside his educational research, Andrew has also written and presented extensively on arts-based research at international symposia and in academic journals. His research interests include graphic texts, memoir, creative non-fiction, autoethnography, and critical and creative approaches to research. Andrew uses Derrida's theories on 'picto-ideo-phonographic' writing to create multimodal and nonlinear texts. His work challenges the 'prose-centrism' of traditional university research by incorporating images and design into its meaning-making process. Andrew supports the expansion of the term 'writing' to include 'non-verbal' and 'graphic' elements as readily as it currently embraces words and prose.

Andrew has published critical and creative work in Wet Ink, TEXT, Teaching and Teacher Education, Creative Approaches to Research, English in Australia, Liminalities, the Journal of Academic Language and Learning, and New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing.

Andrew's new book, Raging against the Mass-Schooling Machine: An Autoethnography of a Beginning Teacher, was published by Sense Publishers in 2017.
