Research Biography

Arie Budiyarto is a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental Health at the College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University, South Australia, under the prestigious LPDP Scholarship from the Government of Indonesia. With over 15 years of experience in community-based waste management, starting as a government officer in Kulon Progo in 2010, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Universitas Gadjah Mada and a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on innovative strategies for community-driven waste management and recycling through the Waste Bank model. Arie has published internationally, with one article cited more than 47 times, and is currently collaborating on studies addressing waste management practices across ASEAN countries.

Research Expertise

Arie Budiyarto is an expert in community-based waste management and environmental health. As an academic, his expertise lies in the study of sustainable waste practices, recycling systems, and circular economy approaches at the community level. In addition to his research role, he actively collaborates with academics and professionals to develop innovative strategies for waste reduction and resource recovery in Indonesia and across ASEAN countries.

Research Interests

Arie Budiyarto’s research currently focuses on household-level waste management, recognizing households as the largest source of waste generation in most developing countries. His work prioritizes upstream strategies to tackle unmanaged waste and reduce harmful practices such as open burning through participatory approaches and policy integration. Guided by the Integrated Sustainable Waste Management (ISWM) framework, his research addresses six interconnected dimensions—technical, environmental, socio-cultural, institutional, economic, and policy/legal—to develop holistic and sustainable solutions for community-based waste systems.

Looking ahead, Arie plans to expand his research by integrating community-based waste management with waste-to-energy approaches. To guide this integration, he intends to apply the ISWM framework, leveraging its multi-dimensional aspects to develop comprehensive strategies that reduce unmanaged waste, promote circular economy principles, strengthen environmental health outcomes, and provide alternative energy solutions tailored to local conditions.

Research Collaborations

Arie Budiyarto is actively engaged in collaborative research with stakeholders at multiple levels. He works closely with the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which supports his doctoral studies, and partners with the Environmental Department of Kulon Progo Regency to strengthen community-based waste management initiatives. In addition, Arie collaborates with local networks such as JPSM (Independent Waste Management Network) to empower grassroots waste management practices. At the academic level, he engages in interdisciplinary collaborations within Flinders University, including with scholars from the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), to explore socio-environmental dimensions of waste management and sustainability.
