Research Biography

Dr Bastien Lechat is a Research Associate at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health under the supervision and mentoring of Professor Danny Eckert. His PhD work addressed important knowledge gaps regarding the consequences of disrupted sleep on health, as well as using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms to detect and treat sleep disorders and their pathology more efficiently. He specifically focused on the impact of sleep fragmentation on health and developed new biomarker of brain activity during sleep predictive of all-cause mortality, sleepiness and cardiovascular health. Dr Lechat is <1 year post doctorate, yet his research program is rapidly developing, and aims to improve diagnostic and management of sleep disorders for all, using technology including machine learnings and wearables. He has collaborated with researchers and industry globally to find new ways of refining and improving clinical sleep medicine. He is particularly interested in understanding the physiological mechanisms, consequences and potential treatment target arising from night-to-night variability in obstructive sleep apnoea.
