Research Biography

Dr. Constantin Seidl is an applied water and agricultural economist, and a member of the Water, Environment and Food economics policy group (WEF group) in the College of Business, Government and Law at Flinders University. He holds a Master in Agricultural Economics from Humboldt University in Germany and a PhD in Global Food Studies from the University of Adelaide in 2020. Dr. Seidl’s research focuses on Australian water markets and farmer adaptation behaviour in the Murray-Darling Basin, but he has also worked on farm profitability and decision making of Australian inland-region grape growers. His research outcomes have been published in high quality journals such as Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Rural Studies, and Agricultural Water Management (ERA A* and A levels). Dr. Seidl is currently exploring the socio-economic drivers and impacts of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Schemes in Australia as part of a collaborative research project with CSIRO.

Career Highlights

Dr. Seidl's funding highlights include:

-funding from CSIRO to conduct managed aquifer recharge stakeholder mapping for the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance (Northern Victoria)- 2024.  

-funding from the Limestone Coast Landscape Board for consultancy work to study the Lower Limestone coast groundwater market (2024).

-funding from the Northern Territory government for consultancy work to undertake upper King River managed aquifer recharge legislation policy analysis, stage 1 (2023-2024). 

Dr. Seidl's PhD thesis (Understanding adaptation and water market behaviour of irrigators and non-landholder stakeholders in the Murray-Darling Basin, 2020) received a Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. 

Team Members

Constantin is a member of the newly-formed Water, Environment and Food economics policy group (WEF) in College of Business, Government and Law (BGL) at Flinders University. They are also associates in the Centre for Social Impact & the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training. 

The team is comprised of eight distinguished environment and resource economists including award-winning Professor Sarah Wheeler, Professor Neville Crossman, and ARC Future Fellow Professor Alec Zuo, along with two PhD students. Their research aims to enhance the management and allocation of water in the Murray-Darling Basin, evaluate the impacts of water scarcity on regional and farming communities, develop water markets, promote sustainable farming practices, and assess the effects of drought and flooding.

Collaborating with industry and regional stakeholders and led by Professor Wheeler, the team aims to develop policies that tackle Australia's water challenges and the effects of climate change, with a strong commitment to real-world solutions and informing best practices for sustainable water management.
