Prof Derek Chew is an active clinical and interventional cardiologist as well as a highly experienced clinical trialist and outcomes researcher in cardiovascular medicine. He is a Professor of Cardiology at Flinders University, Regional Director of Cardiology for the Southern Adelaide Health Service (SALHN) and Lifelong Theme Leader at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). He is also a Matthew Flinders Fellow at Flinders University. He has completed a Masters of Public Health in quantitative methods at the Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD centred on understanding the gaps in Australian acute coronary syndrome (ACS) care. His clinical career and research endeavours are focussed on implementing changes in the health system, often through large-scale in-practice randomised trials, to improve clinical care and patient outcomes. Prof Chew’s translational research influences policy, health system configuration, as well as ACS guidelines nationally and internationally and he has successfully secured over $15M in research funding to date.
With the expanding array of therapeutic options, technological innovations and digital information available in cardiac care, ensuring that both existing and novel approaches lead to optimal and cost-effective clinical outcomes requires meaningful and evidence-based application to the clinical community. Accordingly, the true value of such innovations must be evaluated by purposefully designed clinical trials which are embedded within clinical practice. Prof Chew thus seeks to design and undertake such clinical studies, both at patient- and system-levels, which target the drivers of sub-optimal care to better inform clinical decision-making and ultimately improve the delivery of clinical care and optimise patient outcomes.
