Research Biography
Giorgina Maxwell is a Genetic Counsellor currently working in the Department of Opthalmology on projects including the Australian and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma, based at Flinders University. Giorgina is involved with supporting projects aimed at delineating the phenotypes of glaucoma-associated genes, the interpretation of genetic results, and the ethical and psychosocial implications of genetic testing for glaucoma for affected individuals and their families. Giorgina provides counselling and feedback of results from accredited genetic testing to research participants, and has contributed to the development of educational material for eye health professionals. Giorgina has strong research interests in the providing equitable healthcare, mental health, and the psychological implications of genetic testing.
Giorgina has worked as a Genetic Counsellor in clinical and research settings. She completed a double degree Bachelor of Science with Major in Genetics and Bachelor of Arts with an Extended Major in Psychology at Monash University in 2020 going on to complete her Master of Genetic Counselling at the University of Melbourne in 2022. Since then she has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Monash University.
Giorgina serves as a Commitee member for the GSNV, supports paediatric deafblind research, and participates in a number of ASGC working groups including chairing the Genetic Counsellor Awareness Day group.
