My research interest in theology was initially focussed on eschatology, especially a theology of death. More recently, however, I have developed a research interst in christology, in particular the emotional life of Christ and the role of the emotions in his disciples who seek to bear his image in the world. Closely connected to the question of the role of the emotions in Christ's life and in Christian life, I have also turned my research attention to developing a Christian theology of lament, which the Christian churches have generally failed to integrate into their systematic theologies.
Henry Novello began his professional career in chemistry. Educated at Sacred Heart College in Adelaide, South Australia, and at the University of Adelaide where he took a B.Sc. degree, he worked in the university's Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry before earning a second baccalaureate in theology at Flinders University. He went on to study postgraduate theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome) where he received a licentiate in dogmatic theology (S.T.L.) in 1998. He returned to Adelaide to commence Ph.D. studies and was awarded a Ph.D. in theology by Flinders University in 2002. He worked at Flinders as a research associate in theology until he accepted appointment as a lecturer in theology at the University of Notre Dame (Fremantle, Australia) in 2004. He returned to Adelaide in 2009 to focus purely on research interests and has had full academic status at Flinders University since 2009. In addition to many articles published in peer-reviewed journals such as Gregorianum, Irish Theological Quarterly, Worship, Pacifica, and Australasian Catholic Record, Henry Novello is the author of the monographs Death as Transformation: A Contemporary Theology of Death, which was published by Ashgate in 2011, and Passionate Deification: The Integral Role of the Emotions in Christ's Life and in Christian Life, which was published by Pickwick Publications in 2019.
