Research Biography

James joined Flinders Law School as a lecturer in 2021. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral research fellow and a research fellow at the Health Ethics and Policy Laboratory, D-HEST, ETH Zürich, Switzerland from 2018 to 2020. James completed his PhD in 2018 with Professor Dianne Nicol, Dr Jane Nielsen and Associate Professor Michael Charleston at the University of Tasmania. His PhD thesis examined intellectual property law, institutional economics and open source licensing for bioinformatics software. As a postdoctoral research fellow, James studied the need to protect genomic and health data within personalised medical research as part of the Data Protection and Personalised Health (DPPH) project. This project involves a collaboration between ETH and EPFL in Lausanne to implement a country wide system for the privacy preserving exchange of health records between hospitals and research institutes in Switzerland. In addition, James's research also involves examining the right to science under international law.
