Research Biography

Hello and welcome to my homepage!

Prior to working in tertiary education, I worked in Long Day Childcare services both as an unqualified and qualified childcare educator in Adelaide. It has shaped my continued passion for the complex relational work performed in prior-to-school settings.

I currently lead the Early Childhood discipline. Acknowledging the classed and gendered histories of the discipline, our aim is to work collaboratively with our teaching and learning communities to explore critical pedagogies with an agentive, democractic-participation focus.

My research interests include:

  • pedagogical practices with very young children;
  • the workplace worth and wellbeing of early childhood educators; and,
  • interdisciplinary, participatory action research methods.

Research Interests

Relationships are core in my research. Engaging directly with community, I employ participatory and critical research methodologies in my work.


  • I use ethics of care to study the workplace worth and wellbeing of educators in early childhood settings, in order to promote the worth of early years work to improve educators' working conditions and inform workforce planning
  • I use the transformation-of-participation perspective to study literacy teaching and learning as an agentic practice, in order to improve young children's literacy learning and development using multimodal, play-based, relational pedagogies

My scholarship also involves higher education curriculum design and cooperative education practices, which continually inform my own teaching as a reflective practitioner.
