He specialises in educational research that intersects with remote First Nations communities. He supervises a number of post-graduate students and is focused on supporting publication of his students. He works collaboratively with researchers around Australia and is recognised for his work on 'red dirt thinking' as an alternative to deficit understandings of First Nations education in remote communities.
Between 2011 and 2016 John Guenther was the Principal Research Leader for the Remote Education Systems project with the Cooperative Research Centre for Remote Economic Participation. Over the last 17 years he has managed numerous research and evaluation projects in remote parts of Australia with an emphasis on education and training, family services, justice, child protection and family violence. Most of these projects have included work in remote Aboriginal communities or in regional contexts where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders have been involved. In these contexts, research and evaluation work is invariably complex because of the cross-cultural nature of the work. More details about his work are available at remote eduation systems.
