Research Biography

Dr Alexander is a lecturer and researcher in the Disability and Community Inclusion Unit of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on outcomes in employment for people with intellectual disability. Specifically Customised Employment and specialised on the job training strategies, such as Systematic Instruction.

Dr. June Alexander’s research encompasses a broad range of topics related to disability and employment, including open employment, social enterprises, microenterprises, and Australian Disability Enterprises (ADEs). Her work has included studies on microenterprise ownership among people with physical disability and, intellectual disability, employment created for people with intellectual disability in the aged care workforce, and the transition of ADEs to open employment models.

Dr. Alexander has also investigated on-the-job training, the use of virtual reality in workplace settings, and the influence of people with disabilities on workplace practices. A significant focus of her research is on Customised Employment in Australia, where she examines current practices and future directions. Additionally, she has led evaluations of innovative projects designed to support school-to-work transitions to open employment, microenterprises, and social enterprises.

Her work contributes significantly to advancing inclusive employment practices, helping to shape policy and practice across Australia and beyond.

Dr Alexander’s pre-academic life includes 30 years’ experience as a Developmental Educator and her previous experience includes CEO of a best practice SA rural disability service.
