Research Biography

Karen is an Associate Director at the Torrens Resilience Institute in Adelaide, South Australia through which she maintains a strong focus on research dedicated to preparing health professionals to more effectively respond to disasters and emergencies. Karen is also currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Flinders University where she coordinates post graduate emergency nursing topics and an interdisciplinary Masters degree in disaster health care. Karen has a background in emergency nursing and has worked as an emergency department nurse since 1997. Karen is a fellow of the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia and continues to work in the emergency department on a casual basis.

Research Interests

Karen's research has focused primarily on emergency nurses and disasters. Previous studies conducted in this area have explored disaster education and training of emergency nurses as well as the role of emergency nurses in disaster response. Karen is currently involved in research into the willingness of emergency nurses to respond to disasters.
