Professor Tremellen was appointed to the position of Strategic Professor of Reproductive Medicine in 2015 with a vision of improving access to high quality fertility treatment for all individuals wishing to become parents.
He graduated from the University of Adelaide with a medical degree (with honours) and a PhD in the field of reproductive immunology before completing his clinical training in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine. His primary research focus is on the impact of nutrition on reproduction.
This research lead to the development of the nutraceutical fertility supplement Menevit „¢ that has been shown to improve sperm quality and the chances of conception, and is now marketed throughout Australasia by Bayer.
Professor Tremellen is editor of Nutrition, Fertility and Human Reproductive Function (CRC Press), a key textbook that highlights the importance of nutrition in all aspects of male and female reproductive function. He passionately believes that in order to maximise a couple's chances of achieving their dream of having a healthy child, we must first optimise male and female nutrition and lifestyle before conception.
His other research interests relate to the identification and treatment of premature loss of ovarian reserve, plus investigation of how poor nutrition and obesity combine to trigger inflammation that impairs ovarian function, sperm production and successful implantation of the embryo.
Professor Tremellen has worked at the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics at Oxford University and has an interest in analysing the many ethical issues relating to reproductive medicine and associated heath policy. He is on the editorial board of the journal Human Reproduction, has published over 70 original journal articles and book chapters, and holds three patents covering innovations in reproductive medicine.
