Research Biography

As the Research Director of the China-Australia joint laboratory for Native Bioresource Industry Innovation (CANBI2) and a recognised leader in Environmental, Industrial and Medical Biotechnology, my research focuses on designing, enabling, implementing and advancing industry-driven research on closed system approaches using high-yield microbes in environmental, aqua- and agricultural and commercial applications for developing renewable products and sustainable industries. I have published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Nature, 95 journal articles (citations >3,500), 5 books and 11 book chapters, leading to a H-index of 28. My research has won many awards, the NQ Corporate Business Women Award 2011 and the JCU Advisor of the Year Award 2016, being the latest. I have been the President of ASPAB (http://www.aspab.org/), is an Editor of Botanica Marina, and has served on the Science and Education Committee of the Advanced Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (AMCRC) and the Tarong Science Steering Committee for Microalgae GHG emission abatement at coal-fired power stations.

Research Interests

I am a research-active senior academic. My research and professional approach is driven by two key objectives:

1. To design, enable, implement and advance industry-driven research and research training that empowers problem solving approaches to domestic and global challenges in a changing economy, and

2. To conduct research on closed system approaches using high-yield miccrobes in environmental, aqua- and agricultural and commercial applications for developing sustainable industries and communities.

Specific research interests for commercial applications are:

  • Pathway development to economically and environmentally sustainable industries and renewable product production for human health and nutrition, agriculture, biomaterials and biofuels.
  • Biorefining of bioresources for diverse renewable product developemnt adopting circular economy logistics.
  • Microbial and microalgal potential for greenhouse gas, wastewater, and waste solids remediation.
  • Microbial capacity for biodegradable plastic production.
  • Molecular identity of soil, marine and freshwater microbes
  • Industrial-scale innovative cultivation and biofilter design
  • Aquaculture wastewater treatment for nutrient and pathagen removal
  • Medical cell biology
