Research Biography

Dr Leah Couzner is based in the Paramedic Science Unit where her areas of research focus include both clinical education and the provision of pre-hospital care. She is currently involved in projects exploring the self-reported knowledge and experiences of undergraduate Paramedic Science students, and the effectiveness of clinical education methods. Additionally, she has assisted with the analysis of data held within the SA Ambulance Service's Cardiac Arrest Registry. Leah also sits as an ex-officio member of the SA Ambulance Service Research Review Committee, providing a link between Flinders University and industry organisations.

Leah's PhD research focused on the measurement of quality of care for older adults in subacute healthcare settings using instruments that are suitable for inclusion in economic evaluations. The project used Discrete Choice Experiment methodology to explore older adults' preferences for rehabilitation and transition care, examining the characteristics of these services that were most highly valued. The second component of the project focused upon the health and quality of life of older rehabilitation and transition care recipients and how this compared to that of the South Australian general population through the application of the ICECAP capability index and the EQ-5D health status instruments.

Within Flinders University, Leah has previously held research positions working on qualitative and quantitative projects in the areas of clinical rehabilitation, health economics, tertiary education, nursing, mental health nursing and Indigenous women's health. Prior to this she was employed in the community aged care sector.

Leah has experience teaching in first, second and third year undergraduate topics focusing on the Australian health care system, qualitative research methods and sociology and epidemiology.

Leah is a member of the Flinders University Social and Behavioural Research Ethics Committee's low risk review panel.
