Research Biography

Dr Norton has conducted and continues to conduct a number of large physical activity (PA) interventions across South Australia (> 1,000 participants). She has analysed and reported on paediatric outcomes from ICU; injury hospitalisations from the National Hospital Morbidity database and spinal cord injury hospitalisations using the Australian Spinal Cord Registry data. She has managed a range of international clinical trials for the ANZ Paediatric Intensive Care Registry (ANZPICR) resulting in publications and on-going funding.

Past successes include grant funding from the South Australian Department of Health as a CI to undertake a national study into children's outcomes from intensive care; an ARC grant to conduct research into the effectiveness of PA interventions on major health risk factors; University grants supporting workplace PA interventions and integrating mindfulness-based training into a lifestyle management course for health professionals.

Publications have included journal articles, book chapters and a co-authored textbook. Her writing over recent years has also included numerous reports commissioned by various government departments and for professional organisations.

She has co-developed a number of software applications. HealthScreen Pro which is designed to facilitate pre-exercise screening and assessment of health and fitness of adults. This app is designed for use by exercise physiologists, fitness professionals, strength and conditioning coaches, and by students in disciplines such as exercise, fitness and health science programs. The ExerciseScience Toolkit (http://www.exercisesciencetoolkit.com/) an online application for use by students in exercise, fitness and health science programs as well as exercise physiologists and fitness professionals.
