Research Biography

Professor Maria Crotty is a clinical academic and rehabilitation physician. In 2001 she was appointed Professor and Director of Rehabilitation Medicine based in the Rehabilitation Unit at Repatriation General Hospital which moved to the Flinders Medical Centre campus in November 2017.

She leads a multidisciplinary research group who focus on how to implement best and promising care models and practices within health and aged care settings. Embedded within a healtcare setting their research aims to bridge research and clinical care using implementation science approaches.

Research Interests

Professor Crotty works in a rehabilitation unit and has experience running pragmatic randomised controlled trials in hospital, community and aged care settings. Her trials examine issues of importance to clinicians and policy makers working with disabled and older people so she has undertaken research on new models of care (home rehabilitation, transition care, day rehabilitation). She developed and evaluated models for telerehabilitation for people with strokes and hip fractures using funding from the Commonwealth in 2015. These models were implemented in SA Rehabilitation units in 2017.

She works in the NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre and leads two activities

a) examining theimplementation of best practice clinical guidelines (developed the 2016 NHMRC Clinical Practice Guidelines for People with Dementia)

b) investigating which models of care people who live in residential aged care prefer and which provide better value to the Australian community, people with dementia and their families

In addition she has undertaken evaluations for Commonwealth including the Evaluation of the National Transition Care Program in 2007-8. She has experience in synthesising evidence and has undertaken several Cochrane Reviews including reviews on Virtual Reality in Stroke Rehabilitation, Telerehabilitation in stroke and Non pharmacological treatements in dementia.
