Personal profile

Research Biography

I am a clinician-scientist interested in the genetic basis of eye diseases and the development of gene therapy treatments. I completed Medical School at the University of Adelaide, where I was President of the Adelaide Medical Students’ Society and also attained a first class Honours in Medical Science for my research on neurodegeneration. I worked as a first-year doctor at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide, where I was named the top intern for both the Medical department and Emergency department. After working as a service registrar in the Ophthalmology department at Flinders Medical Centre in 2014, I took up a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University to complete my Doctorate of Philosophy. My thesis explored the development of viral vector gene therapies for retinitis pigmentosa and achromatopsia eye diseases.

In the year after my PhD, I undertook a postdoctoral research fellowship at Flinders University. There, I was the Chief Investigator on a grant from the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia, where I tested a rAAV virus vector gene therapy for neuroprotection in experimental glaucoma. I also contributed to the development and clinical validation of a polygenic risk score for predicting onset and severity of glaucoma. In 2019, I commenced eye surgery training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in South Australia. During my Ophthalmology training, I am continuing my clinical and translational research projects, remain an associate supervisor of two PhD students, and remain an active peer-reviewer for international journals, national grants, and higher degree students.
