Research Biography

Mark is a Biomedical Engineer in the Flinders Biomedical Engineering Department, Construction and Development Group. The Department has substantial engineering tools, technical expertise and 40 years' experience in developing & supporting biomedical devices for research and clinical use.
The Flinders Biomedical Engineering Department supports the College of Medicine and Public Health by providing solutions to technical problems, and developing biomedical devices and innovative tools for world-class research, including:

  • Wireless, and wired systems for optogenetics research into pain control
  • Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence imager, for investigating lymphatic pathway generation in flap tissue after reconstructive surgery
  • Angiosterrometer for studying early diagnosis of lipoedema
  • Electrode arrays and amplifiers for researching EEG
  • Pupilometry, for measuring the mental effort involved in discerning sound in the presence of background noise
  • Mechanical manipulation and force measuring instruments for studying stretch cycles in intestinal tissue
  • Controlled light/temperature environments for investigating brown adipose tissue
  • Hypoallergenic boiling and drying devices for oral immunotherapy trials with nuts
  • Custom tissue support baths, enabling tissue to be studied within minutes of excision from patients

The Flinders Biomedical Engineering Department mentors Advanced Studies students during the development & trialling of biomedical devices and concepts; some examples include: early schleroderma diagnosis tools, estimating blood loss during labour and delivery and developing lymphoedema assessment methods.
