Research Biography

Dr. Muktar Ahmed, Research Fellow-Data Scientist, is a leading researcher in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, pharmacogenomics, and machine learning applications. Dr. Ahmed currently serves as a Research Fellow Data Scientist at CMPH, where he focuses on advancing knowledge in colorectal and oesophageal cancer. With a Ph.D. in Genetic Epidemiology from UniSA, Dr. Ahmed brings a deep understanding of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Dr. Ahmed's primary research interest lies in leveraging advanced data science methodologies to address critical health challenges. He is currently working on natural language processing (NLP) applications in pathology reports to automate colorectal cancer surveillance systems and analysing hospital volume and oesophageal cancer burden using Australian and New Zealand data. Additionally, he is collaborating with researchers in the United States using the All of Us data to develop polygenic risk scores for longevity and type 2 diabetes risk prediction, incorporating machine learning techniques and social determinants of health in diabetics.

A recipient of a seed grant from Flinders University, Dr. Ahmed is investigating the mental health impact on partners and care providers of patients with colorectal cancer. His work emphasises the development of AI-driven research, including web-based and mobile applications for healthcare, to advance disease management and patient care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ahmed has achieved significant milestones, including publishing over 60 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals [Over 110,000 citations and H-index 73 Google Scholar]. He actively collaborates with international organisations, academic institutions, and local health ministries to tackle pressing global health challenges.

Research Interests

  • Cancer prevention and control, with a focus on colorectal and oesophageal cancers.
  • Polygenic risk scores for predicting longevity and chronic disease risk, including cross-ancestry prediction.
  • Application of social determinants of health in machine learning models for diabetes management.
  • Mental health impacts on caregivers and partners of cancer patients.
  • Health equity and improving early detection of childhood cancers in low-resource settings.
