Research Biography

Nigel Levings is one of Australia’s leading theatre lighting designers. In a distinguished career he has lit over 580 original productions including 223 operas and 31 musicals.

His awards for lighting design include the Australian Helpmann Award and Green Room Awards, the Los Angeles Ovation Award and the Canadian Dora Mava Moore Award. On Broadway he has won 2 Outer Circle Critics Awards, a Drama Desk and a Tony Award for his lighting design. He was awarded the Centenary Federation Medal by the Australian Government for his services to opera lighting and honoured by the South Australian Government with an SA Great Arts Award and recently with a Ruby Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

He is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia. He was a key note speaker at the SPARC conference on lighting design in Sydney in 2014. He presented two major papers at the OISTAT 2nd International Conference on Theatre Lighting Design in Hangzhou China in 2011. He has taught masterclasses in theatre lighting design at the Adelaide Centre for Performing Arts and at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
