Research Biography

Patrice is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the College of Education, Psychology, and Social Work. She holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology (2006) and Clinical Psychology (2008) from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, and a PhD in Public Health from Curtin University, Australia (2024) where she was the recipient of an Australian Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship Award. In 2008-2009, she completed a fellowship in Substance Abuse Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto, Canada.

Her research primarily focuses on epidemiological studies related to substance abuse, mental health, and healthcare access for vulnerable populations. She has conducted significant research on substance abuse in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the Americas, producing numerous journal articles and technical reports including contributing to the Hemispheric Report on Drug Demand Reduction for the Americas (2021). Her more recent work explores suicide, depression, and anxiety, as well as healthcare access for individuals with serious mental illness and chronic physical illness. This research has influenced mental health policy reform and government action in Jamaica.

Within the Australian context, Patrice has contributed to the national autism research and policy. She co-authored the landscape mapping research which informed the Australia National Autism Strategy. She was also the lead author of the Australasian Autism Research Council 2023 Research Priorities Updates, which sets the direction for autism research in Australia.

Patrice currently has 42 journal articles and two book chapters and a dozen co-authored technical reports for national and international bodies. She continues to conduct research in her areas of interest related to the intersection of mental health and physical health (including neurological disorders such as migraine), health care access for people with mental health problem, substance misuse, mental health and well-being interventions for students and autistic individuals.
