Research Biography

Richard has a background in clinical medical imaging. He has had extensive experience in clinically based research into the use of diagnostic ultrasound imaging. He joined the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in 2011 as senior vascular scientist with responsibility for the development of advanced ultrasound imaging techniques, clinical and research databases, the Vascular Diagnostic Unit and the Robert K Foreman research laboratory.

His research interests have included endothelial function in vascular disease, the identification of microvascular structures in chronic arterial occlusions using contrast-enhanced ultrasound, the use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) to accurately assess arterial wall calcium and post-angioplasty dissection, and the use of IVUS to modify treatment and improve outcomes in peripheral arterial endovascular interventions. He was the principal investigator for the first RCT to assess whether the use of IVUS can improve patency of endovascular intervention in the femororpopliteal arteries.

His current major research focuses are the use of intra-vascular ultrasound (IVUS) in peripheral endovascular interventional therapies and the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in vascular disease

He was awarded the Honours Medal by University of South Australia in 2010 and a Heart Foundation of Australia Health Professional Scholarship in 2015.
