Research Biography

A/Prof Sarah Thompson was appointed as a staff specialist upper gastrointestinal surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre, and Senior Lecturer at Flinders University in 2019. A/Prof Thompson completed her surgical training at the University of Calgary, Canada and subsequently completed a Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A., and an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery fellowship in Adelaide, South Australia. A/Prof Thompson is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is an active member of Adelaide Gastroenterology where she specializes in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, large hiatus hernias, achalasia, biliary colic, and gastric and oesophaegeal cancers.

A/Prof Thompson’s PhD focused on better diagnostic and staging tools for patients suffering from oesophageal cancer. Her current areas of research include gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, oesophageal motility disorders, and upper gastrointestinal cancer.

A/Prof Thompson is a board member of Australian and New Zealand Gastric Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA), and maintains an active membership with the Society of American Gastric and Esophageal Surgeons (SAGES). A/Prof Thompson is the Specialty Editor for Upper GI Surgery for the ANZ Journal of Surgery, and she is on the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Surgery. A/Prof Thompson is the Topic Coordinator for the 4th year core topics in the Doctor of Medicine program.

A/Prof Thompson has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and was included as a chief investigator in obtaining over $1.4 million dollars in research and clinical development grants.
