Sean Weatherly

Sean's current PhD candidature at Flinders University involves working with the new financial field to deliver a model that allows researchers to undertake macroanalyses of government arts subsidies. His focus is on grant subsidies for Independent artists in South Australia delivered from all three levels of government.

Sean graduated from Flinders Unversity Drama Centre in 2002 with a BA (Honours). In 2009 he commenced working for the AusStage project as a researcher, collaborator and data entry specialist.

In 2014, Sean worked closely with the University of Oslo to establish IbsenStage a new online database documenting Henrik Ibsen's work and performances around the world. He became chief editor of the project and was responsible for data entry, data cleaning, website testing, liasing with technical experts and ensuring end user functionality.

Since 2016 Sean has enjoyed being a research assistant, working closely on research projects for Professors Peta Tait, Julie Holledge, Joanne Tomkins and Associate Professors Jonathan W. Marshall and Maryrose Casey. His detailed research covered Australian corroborees performed publicly for audiences prior to federation, Fremantle Arts Centre performances during the 19th century when it functioned as a lunatic asylum, Chinese Opera and Theatre during the Victorian gold rush era and A Global Doll's House.

As a data entry expert, Sean has added a vast amount of information into the AusStage database including all of Australia's major festivals, recent South Australian theatre companies, Independent theatre performance, the Singapore Festival, butoh performances, ecological theatre and much more.

Recently Sean helped clean and prepare the Theatre Aotearoa database from New Zealand for importing into AusStage. He also contributed to the design and implementation of the new financial field in AusStage, making AusStage one of the only cultural databases in the world to include both cultural and financial records.

Sean was lucky enough to have a career highlight whilst studying at the Flinders University Drama Centre. He performed as one of the 5 children about to take a joy flight in Aaron Copland's The Second Hurricane as part of Robyn Archer's 2000 Adelaide Festival of Arts.

After graduating from the Drama Centre, Sean moved to Melbourne and performed in a number of new Australian works at La Mama. He performed in the Australian premiere of Sondheim's Saturday Night at Chapel off Chapel and the BMW Edge along side Matthew Robinson and Eddie Perfect. He performed in the Australian Premiere of McCubbin directed by Martin Croft. He produced and performed in Tomfoolery for the 2004 Melbourne Comedy and 2008 Adelaide Fringe Festivals. He was choir master in several seasons of Sing Your Own Musical at the Melbourne International Arts Festival and several Adelaide Cabaret Festivals. He composed the music for the Midsumma Festival hit A Narrow Time For Angels and went on to compose the music for Price Check - The Supermarket Musical, pubished by David Spicer Productions in 2021. Price Check - The Supermarket Musical was been presented at Theatre Works in St Kilda and at The Bakehouse Theatre in Adelaide.

In 2019 Sean received a grant from City of Port Phillip to orchestrate Price Check and present a concert version at The Alex Theatre in St Kilda performed by graduates of the Australian National Academy of Music in South Melbourne. Sean currently owns and operates a successful children's entertainment business performing as Noodles The Clown since 2010.
