Steven Kolber is a teacher and researcher, with interests in improving outcomes for teachers. He was a proud public school teacher for 12 years, being named a top 50 finalist in the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize. He is passionate about teacher collaboration which he supports through organising Teach Meets and running #edureading (an online academic reading group). His most recent publication, ‘Empowering Teachers and Democratising Schooling: Perspectives from Australia’, co-edited with Keith Heggart explores these topics further. Steven has represented teachers globally for Education International, at the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the OECDs Global Teaching Insights, and UNESCOs Teacher Task Force 2030.
My research interests centre on:
Teacher Empowerment: Exploring methods to enhance teachers' autonomy and influence within educational systems.
Professional Learning: Investigating effective professional development strategies for educators.
Pedagogy and Andragogy: Examining teaching methodologies for both children and adult learners.
Teacher Research Engagement: Promoting educators' involvement in research activities to inform practice.
Activism and Social Media: Studying the role of social media in educational activism and teacher collaboration.
I am a qualitative researcher with a focus on developing teacher confidence and competence in research integration, pedagogy, and empowerment. I am highly skilled at bridging the worlds of teachers and academic research. I am a curriculum expert, with extensive knowledge around the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledges’ within teaching and learning. I am highly skilled as a presenter and leader of professional learning for teachers and educators across multiple settings. I am skilled at developing innovative social media strategies related to teachers work and lives as a tool for professional development and teacher empowerment.
