Research Biography

Tahlia Johnson is a proud Aboriginal women, mother, senior lecturer (First Nations Health and Wellbeing) and researcher working on Kaurna Country, Flinders University.

Tahlia is also a passionate Midwife with a strong commitment to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, particularly in the areas of pregnancy and postpartum care. With over four years of experience in tertiary education, she is dedicated to fostering the growth and confidence of students entering the health care system, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to provide culturally safe care. As an emerging Aboriginal academic and research leader in women’s health, Tahlia’s focus lies in making lasting, meaningful, and ethical change to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. She is driven by a deep desire to contribute to research, education, and advocacy that enhances culturally responsive healthcare practices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Research Interests

Tahlia’s research focuses on improving pregnancy and postpartum outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities by promoting culturally safe and responsive care. Her work explores the intersections of maternal and women’s health, education, and health equity, with an emphasis on developing ethical, evidence-based approaches that create lasting and meaningful improvements in health outcomes. She is particularly interested in supporting the education and growth of health professionals to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide culturally safe care, and in advancing research, advocacy, and policy initiatives that enhance healthcare practices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
