Personal profile

Research Interests

My main research interest is in the sensory and motor innervation of the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary bladder. Other areas of research also include electrophysiology and pharmacology of smooth muscle, enteric nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic and sensory innervation of visceral organs. I utilise both in vivo and in vitro approaches and use a variety of experimental techniques (morphological, electrophysiological, pharmacological, molecular) in order to identify the key ion channels, receptors and other proteins that make the neural pathways function. This provides the foundation for rational development of new drugs to treat autonomic and sensory disorders in a range of organ systems including urogenital, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular.
