With academic qualifications in Environmental Health from Jimma University and a Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences from Addis Abbaba University, Dr. Yirsaw has worked at Hawassa University in Ethiopia, as Head of the Environmental Health Department, in teaching and research.
He delivered community environmental health services in the region. He joined the Japanese Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine as a research student in 2009 – 2011.
At the University of South Australia, Adelaide, where he gained his Ph.D., he researched with support from CRC Care (which stands for the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment), the use of new plant-based nano-particles, synthesized from green mango peel extract and iron chloride to provide a novel and effective treatment for oil-contaminated soil
