Different questions, new voices: re-engaging historical Hollywood ($1,200)

Description

Internal research grant
This project is a creative re-engagement with a canonical queer film text produced at the tail-end of the McCarthy era, The Children’s Hour (1961). Three researchers worked collaboratively to produce outputs offering varying affective engagements: a video essay, designed to interrogate horror discourses (discernible in archival ephemera as well as textual components), and a sound piece, which discovers new ways of honouring and centring marginal historical queer voices (by exploring pro-queer letters written to the director). The creative works were exhibited at a public-facing event where an allied piece of research (a book monograph) was launched.
