Project Details
Description
This project integrates Large Language Model (LLM) powered tools into psychology classrooms to enhance the teaching and learning of statistical concepts. Research Methods courses (1-3) will particularly benefit from this approach.
The project is relevant because it addresses technology-enhanced learning in two important ways:
1. Promotes AI literacy by introducing students to current free generative AI tools such as Gemini, Mistral, and Claude
2. Enhances statistical understanding by teaching students to effectively interact with these tools to grasp challenging concepts (e.g., the Central Limit Theorem)
Beyond simply generating code in R, students will develop the ability to create dynamic visualizations (R Shinny apps) through effective prompting techniques. This skill development requires students to formulate well-structured questions based on foundational knowledge of statistical topics.
The project directly supports multiple strategic outcomes in the CEPSW plan:
1. Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Outcome 1.1)
• The project embraces innovation in teaching by incorporating cutting-edge AI technologies
• Contributes to improving teaching quality metrics, which aligns with the college's goal to maintain their #1 rating in South Australia for teaching quality
2. Digital Learning Innovation (Outcome 8.1 & 8.2)
• Supports upskilling staff in technologies, as faculty will develop expertise in AI tool integration
• Enhances online learning opportunities through the integration of digital tools
3. Research and Critical Thinking Skills (Outcome 5.1)
• Develops students' capacity to apply statistical concepts through interactive AI-powered learning
• Promotes analytical thinking by training students to formulate strong prompts based on statistical knowledge
Other Strategic Benefits
Student Success and Retention (Outcome 7.1)
• Provides additional support for students struggling with difficult statistical concepts
• Creates flexible learning options as students can engage with AI tools at their own pace
Industry Readiness (Outcome 9.1)
• Equips students with AI literacy that is increasingly valued in the knowledge economy
• Develops digital competence in using modern tools for data analysis and visualization
