Project Details
Description
This research project proposes a systematic archaeological investigation aimed at identifying and documenting three protected but currently unlocated shipwrecks—Lady Wellington (1865), Psyche (1865), and Stag (1883)—on Torrens Island. The methodology includes a comprehensive visual survey for two days, employing a precise 2-meter transect spacing along the current AGL Power Station boundary lines. Advanced techniques such as Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) mapping, metal detection, photographic documentation, and drone-based photogrammetric mapping will be employed to ensure thorough coverage and reliable data collection. Complementing the fieldwork research, a desktop assessment will evaluate historical records for accuracy and regulatory compliance requirements related to these shipwreck sites. This combined approach aims to provide robust historic and archaeological research, heritage management strategies and procedural frameworks for managing unexpected maritime archaeological discoveries, thereby supporting informed decision-making for future developments on Torrens Island.
