Abstract
A study was conducted to demonstrate that voltage stabilizers for power cable insulation created a new application area for fullerenes. The study investigated the use of C 60 and [6,6]-phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) fullerenes as voltage stabilizers for high-voltage power cable insulation. The most commonly used polyethylene grade for power cable insulation was low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The study investigated C 60 and PCBM in a first set of experiments. An LDPE compound containing DCP with a concentration c = 1 mmol kg -1 of C 60 or PCBM and corresponding to a weight fraction of about 0.1 wt% was impregnated to perform the experiments.
