Pain is generally the initial symptom of osteoarthritis and this is usually worsened by use of the affected joint. The pattern of pain is also dependent on the affected area. For example, osteoarthritis of the hip often presents as pain in the groin or thigh. Other symptoms of osteoarthritis include stiffness following inactivity, which is often pronounced in the morning, swelling of the affected joint and feelings of joint instability.
