A Pedagogical Analysis of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Curricula in Optometry Programs

This research investigated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health education in university optometry programs through nationwide curriculum mapping, surveys and interviews with educators and students, and the development of consensus-based guidelines for creating a repository of resources to support educators. Findings indicated there was progress and strong commitment from educators to implement the curriculum. However, educators reported being underprepared and under resourced. Students valued the curriculum but found the content minimal and that additional authentic learning opportunities were needed. There was agreement that a repository of educational resources should feature strengths-based resources authored by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals.
