Abstract

During the American spring (April to June) of 1941, the United States (US) military planners were of the opinion that war with Japan was inevitable, but that it would not begin before the summer (July to September) of 1942.1 In preparation they began reinforcing the Philippines with troops and equipment, despite the US Navy's strategic judgement that the Philippines could not be successfully defended against a full-scale Japanese assault.2 This assumption proved to be correct when Japan attacked on 8 December 1941 and subsequently invaded the Philippines seven months earlier than expected...
