Abstract
This chapter outlines the key elements of a transnational peace-education framework for the Islamic school context in Indonesia focusing on the development of English as a foreign language (EFL) material. This framework addresses the need for an approach to language teaching and professional development that values the local context yet promotes peace and respect for diversity. Such a framework is of particular importance in a context such as Indonesia which is multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious, yet with a dominant religious majority. The chapter provides details of the Islamic school context in Indonesia and the literature underpinning the framework. Then the elements of the framework are described including the emphasis on a contextually relevant peace education and professional development for peace focussed pragmatically around activities, themes, skills, methods, materials and assessment. The people and the activity of professional development are linked by Participatory Action Learning and Action Research (PALAR) which ensures that the perspectives of the people are brought to the activity of professional development and material/activity development. Finally, all these elements are encapsulated by the transnational approach.
